The Stones – Montreux, Switzerland
On a walk (not a ‘hike’ as Steve calls it) along Lake Geneva, there are beautiful sights to see. The gardens along the way are breath taking. When you look behind you, there are mountains filled with old homes high on the hills and vineyards… lots of vineyards. When you look across Lake Geneva, you are looking at the mountains of France. All so absolutely beautiful!
Along the shoreline, just before the Castillio Castle, on rocks where the waves come crashing in, we discovered stones piled up, one on top of each other, five or six stones of all sizes, balanced to perfection. There were big stones balanced on little stones in all different angles. It was truly an amazing sight to see. As we were taking pictures of this wonder, one of the piles came crashing down. There was no wind and no waves breaking into the shore line that could have knocked it down. It just fell, right in front of us. We looked at the other piles and they were still standing. A British man standing next to us who stopped riding his bicycle to look at the stones said, “Hey, what did you do? How did you make those rocks fall!” We politely said that we did not do anything—we were just taking pictures.
At first we thought that the stones were held up by some type of wiring or piping. We were amazed to discover that they were really balanced stones. Someone was building, by hand, these monuments of balanced stone. It was such an art.
We wanted to find out more about these stones. Who built them, how often do they get built, how do they do it, who does it, where do the stones come from, how long do they stay balanced, etc. We never did get any answers and I’m still curious to find out. Does anyone know anything about the balanced rocks on Lake Geneva?
